Computer upgrades & hardware repair

A slow computer often just needs the right upgrade. Swapping an old hard drive for a fast SSD or adding memory can make an older machine feel new again — for a lot less than a new computer.

We also replace worn-out parts: batteries, charging ports, fans, power supplies, and more.

What to expect

Here's how it goes.

Most of these visits start with a machine that just feels slow or a part that's worn out — a battery that dies by lunch, a fan that roars, or a charging cable you have to hold at just the right angle. We take a look first, and when an SSD or a little more memory is the obvious win we'll tell you straight rather than run up the bill. Most upgrades and part swaps are done in a day or two, and on a drive upgrade we carry your files and programs over so it feels like the same computer, just a lot faster.

Common questions

Common upgrades questions

Will putting in an SSD really make my old computer faster, or am I wasting my money?

For an everyday computer that takes forever to start up and crawls when you open things, swapping the old hard drive for an SSD is the single biggest difference you can make — it's the upgrade we recommend most, and a lot of machines people were ready to give up on feel close to new afterward. We'll still take a quick look first, though, because once in a while the slowness is something else, or the machine is old enough that it isn't worth the money. If that's the case, we'll tell you straight instead of selling you a part you don't need.

If you put in a new drive, do I lose all my files and programs?

In most cases, no — when we move you to a new SSD we copy your files, photos, and programs over so it feels like the same computer, just faster. The one honest caveat: if the old drive is already failing, some of it may not copy cleanly, and we can't promise every single file survives. That's why we always suggest having your important things backed up before any work — and if you're not sure how, just ask and we'll walk you through it.

Can any laptop be upgraded, or are some stuck the way they are?

Not every one, unfortunately. A lot of thinner and newer laptops have the memory soldered right to the board, and some have the storage soldered on too, which means there's simply nothing to swap. Plenty of others have easy-to-reach slots and upgrade beautifully. That's exactly why we look before promising anything — bring it in, or call us at (574) 337-7557 with the model, and we'll tell you honestly what yours can and can't take.

How much does an upgrade cost, and why the $60 if I already know I want an SSD?

We won't quote a price over the phone, because a guess before we've seen the machine isn't an honest number — the flat $60 covers us actually looking, and it comes right off the total if you go ahead. For a straightforward speed upgrade it's usually quick to confirm that an SSD or more memory is the right call, and you'll get a real price before we touch a thing. No surprises on the bill.

My battery dies in an hour and my charger only works if I hold it just right — can you fix those?

Yes — worn-out batteries, loose charging ports, noisy fans, and tired power supplies are all everyday work for us. Some parts we keep on hand and some we order in for your exact model, so a few of these take an extra day or two while the part shows up; we'll tell you which when we see it. Either way, we'll always confirm the part and the price with you before ordering anything, and most jobs are back in your hands in a day or two.

Whatever broke, we’ve probably seen it. Let’s take a look.

We don’t price repairs over the phone — we look first, so the number’s real. The $60 to look comes right off your repair, and walk-ins are always welcome. Look for the blue door with the stairs on the left side of the parking lot — knock if it’s locked, we’re here.
